What is and Why do We Pray?
Welcome to the first message in our new series on Prayer! In this sermon, we explore the foundational questions: What is prayer, and why do we pray?
Prayer is simply talking to God—interceding for others, expressing our needs, or seeking His will. We take a deep dive into its biblical roots, starting with the first mention of prayer in Genesis 20:7, where Abraham intercedes on behalf of Pharaoh.
We also look at why we pray, following the example of Jesus, who often withdrew to pray (Luke 5:16; Mark 1:35). Scripture reveals several reasons for prayer:
For healing and restoration (James 5:16)
To combat anxiety and bring our requests to God (Philippians 4:6)
To gain answers and revelations (Jeremiah 33:3)
To avoid temptation and stay focused on God (Matthew 26:41)
To love our enemies (Matthew 5:44)
Prayer isn’t just a habit—it’s a powerful form of communication that transforms us, impacts others, and brings us closer to God.
